Meet Recap: Lorenzo got to finally compete in his first Arnold at the Raw Challenge this past weekend. Lorenzo arguably was the strongest he had ever been, but it was a bit of a tale of 2 to 1 calls on the day. He finished the day with a 578lb. squat, 391lb. bench press, and a 716lb. deadlift for a total of 1685lbs! Going into the meet, for a multitude of reasons, we took this peaking block a bit more conservative with loading and it paid off in regards to peaking. In the past we typically had ramped up to some heavier work the final 2 blocks of prep, but this time around things stayed relatively light and we followed a very similar progression plan to what we’d do in a normal block, where nothing really eclipsed RPE 7-8 during the 3 weeks leading into the meet. At Nationals Lorenzo seemed to lack a little pop, and it was hard to designate whether that was from not tapering enough, or too much of a taper, but this solidified that keeping fatigue lower through this final block led to the strongest he has felt on meet day. As mentioned though, it was a bit of a tale of 2 to 1 calls that just didn’t go his way, and that is something we will have to make definitive moving forward so that top end strength isn’t limited by possible technicalities. It was the first time we’ve loaded 750lbs. on meet day and it moved faster than it ever had, but I believe it got called for soft shoulders possibly. Lorenzo has a quick turn around to Rising Tide, so we aim to take what we knew was there at the Arnold and make it no doubt here in 14 weeks.
