Meet Recap: Wascar competed at SBD Sheffield, and was able to break the 5 year standing deadlift World Record with 607lbs! This meet had been a dream of Wascar’s for the last 2 years, and he was able to showcase all that work while taking home a nice paycheck for that World Record! Wascar rounded out the day with a 479lb. squat, 320lb. bench press, and a 607lb. deadlift for a 1406lb. total! While deadlift was absolutely perfect on the day, and likely had another 10-15lbs. in the tank, squat and bench were a bit under from what he had hoped for. It is a bit hard to tell if that was from a slight change in the peaking strategy we used, or the fact that any time you cut 5% bodyweight the week of the meet, it has its effects, especially earlier in the meet. Wascar’s cut went very smooth without any issues (a scale issue is what caused the need for a 2nd weigh-in), but there is also always a risk in cutting that much with how it might affect things. Regardless, we know there is more there to be had for squat and bench, and have some plans in place to adjust how Wascar is going to cut into Worlds. As well as likely make some slight adjustments to the peaking strategy next time around. We had trained into the meet this time around more than any time in the past, and it is possible we didn’t push into quite enough fatigue for the slight taper that was then implemented the week of the meet. The approach we used going into last year’s Worlds seemed to be a good happy medium for squat and bench, so will likely replicate a setup more similar to that while directly mimicking the deadlift taper from this go around.
