Meet Recap: Zach competed at USAPL Winter Wrecker where he was able to put together a 50lb PR total on a near perfect day. Zach ended the day with a 567lb. squat, 407lb. bench press, and a 661lb. deadlift for a combined total of 1637lbs! This meet is a long time coming, as the past 2 meets have just had some oddities happen where Zach was not able to fully execute the strength we knew he had. But outside of a small mishap on his 3rd deadlift, things came together very well on the day and went exactly as planned. Bench was the biggest PR on the day and Zach entered into the 400lb.+ range for the first time in a meet, which is overall a 60lb. increase from where we started a little over 3 years ago when I first coached him into the Arnold Battle of the Regions. Deadlift was the only slight bobble where some grips issue presented itself again on meet day. In training we had implemented some slight technique changes grip wise and heavy rack holds that seemed to really help. And in training deadlift had been more consistent grip wise than it had been in the 2 preps prior. So while I might be a mixed grip supremacist, this scenario with Zach is a good example of where I believe hook grip is going to be needed. Moving forward we are going to commit to training hook grip for at least 2-3 blocks, as Zach has tried it in the past infrequently, but in my opinion it is time to really give it a long term try.
