Meet Recap: Lorenzo competed at his first USAPL Raw Nationals, which is noteworthy based on the 5 years of work scheduling and injuries that prevented Lorenzo from competing in years prior. But the goal of getting on the National stage is complete and Lorenzo was able to put together a 606lb. squat, 380lb. bench press, and a 738lb. deadlift to round out a 1725lb. total! Highlight of the day being deadlift, and we went a touch conservative based on how squat and bench went, but after years of deadlift being Lorenzo’s least consistent lift on meet day, it has now turned around to be his most consistent. This likely comes back to 2 reasons, with the first being switching to mixed grip. Hook grip for Lorenzo just tended to be too inconsistent at heavier load. He has a pretty high sensitivity to positional deviations, and he found it hard to repeat similar patterns with hook grip. At first, mixed definitely was a bit weaker, as hook grip seemed to allow him to leverage into a slightly higher starting position, but as it developed it allowed Lorenzo to consistently be able to display top end strength. Second, for our first couple years together I really struggled finding a balance with deadlift and squat during the peaking phase, as his deadlift is very disproportionately fatiguing at max loads. It is almost crazy that he can hit 325kg over and over and over, but have him grind out 340kg and it will tank his squat for a week. So simple enough, we take his heaviest deadlift of prep a block out, as well as we try to leave 5kg or so in the tank so he doesn’t fully max out. This has created a lot more predictability and has made deadlift, as mentioned, probably his most consistent lift come meet day now.
