Meet Recap: Lorenzo competed at the USAPL New Jersey State Championships, where he was able to take home 1st in the 90kg class and best overall male lifter for the meet! Lorenzo finished the day with a 595lb. squat, 358lb. bench press, and a 716lb. deadlift for a 1,670lb. total. Squat had been trending really well in training, and was likely the best it has looked leading into a meet. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to fully display that on the platform, but I think there is a lot to be excited about moving forward with how squat continued to progress, especially as he keeps working to build back past where he was before the adductor tear. Bench and deadlift had a couple hiccups on the day as well, but Lorenzo stayed composed throughout the meet and did a great job taking what was there. It wasn’t a perfect day, but he executed well, made the lifts he needed, and was able to secure both the win in the 90kg class and Best Overall Male Lifter.
Couldn’t have asked for more from Lorenzo through this prep, and after coaching Lorenzo for the last 8 years, one of the best compliments I can give is that he is the exact same athlete from the day he started until now. As a coach, it is pretty common to have a “honeymoon” period where an athlete is on top of everything, communicating well, filling everything out, and consistent and on top of variables. But inevitably things slip here or there. But Lorenzo is the model of consistency in everything as an athlete, and continues to this day to be on top of everything even when life and motivation has its ups and downs like it will for anyone. It’s an absolute privilege to coach Lorenzo, and a lot of what I have learned as a coach and developed as systems comes from my direct experience of coaching Lorenzo and being able to gather so much meaningful data due to his non-stop consistency.
