Meet Recap: 2nd place at Central Regionals in the 110kg class, PR total with 1559lbs. and a Nationals QT for Brandon. It has been the goal since I started coaching Brandon in 2019 to qualify for Nationals, and he sealed the deal with a 562lb. deadlift on his 2nd attempt, and his total was rounded out by a 573lb. squat and 424lb. bench. It was not a perfect day, as Brandon got a taste of National level judging standards and got called for depth on his 3rd squat and had some pretty long pauses on bench, but this was a great experience to see where we need to improve and the standard he will bring to Nationals next year. We know even more is there strength wise and I have little doubt he can still hit the numbers we expect with an increased standard. I had documented on my stories about the struggles we had as well with Brandon’s deadlift recently due to the big jump in squat strength and the carry over fatigue. And while we are definitely going to experiment after the meet with reducing to 1 day a week deadlift frequency and reduced top set intensity exposure, per usual with Brandon, once we layer back that squat fatigue deadlift starts to show through and had no issues on meet day. Squat and bench progress have been fantastic over the past year, but now it’s time for the year of the deadlift and to get both squat and deadlift to 600lbs. in 2024!
