Meet Recap: For the first time since 2019 Raw Nationals, Matt stepped on the platform once again at the USAPL Mill City Classic. Matt has had a lot of ups and downs since then, and plenty in the time we’ve been working together in the past 15 months, but I know he was extremely excited to get back to the sport he loves and it was a weight off his back to get this total registered. Matt was able to end the day with 545lb. squat, 314lb. bench press, and 600lb. deadlift for a 1460lb. total! The goal on the day was to 1.) get back to competing and 2.) qualify for Nationals in June. Unfortunately we felt a bit short of that ultimate goal. We were a bit surprised when Matt missed his 3rd attempt bench at 325lbs., and that forced the hand a bit to have to reach on his 3rd deadlift attempt at 644lbs. He gave it a good run, and I know Matt said even though he wasn’t able to hit his 3rd attempt deadlift, just the feeling of that pressure and moment did a lot to remind him of his passion for competing. I know we are already talking about finding the next meet, as the fire has been lit and hopefully this is the start of some really consistent and productive training to come!
